Prime Minister Joins Julie Marson MP in Thanking Hertford and Stortford Residents
Boris Johnson thanked Hertford and Stortford residents for taking in Ukrainian refugees in the House of Commons today following a question from MP Julie Marson.
Mrs Marson was in the Chamber for Prime Minister’s Questions when she asked: “Will my Right Honourable Friend join me in thanking my Hertford and Stortford constituents who are offering help and refuge to Ukrainians suffering from and fleeing the Russian invasion?”
She then added: “Will he also set out how his visit to Sweden and Finland ensured closer co-operation with our allies to secure the long-term stability and security of Europe, as my constituents are rightly concerned about ongoing Russian aggression?”
In reply the Prime Minister said: “I thank my Honourable Friend’s constituents very much for what they are doing to help Ukrainians fleeing war and aggression.
“I know that Members up and down the country have constituents who are being incredibly generous, I think we can all be proud of the UK’s efforts.
“Yes, it is true that the UK signed historic declarations the other day with Sweden and Finland to reinforce our mutual security and to fortify Europe’s defences.
“That has been a massive step change in our co-operation, a thoroughly good thing, and it has been driven in the cases of both Sweden and Finland by the people themselves, who see the logic of NATO membership.”
Speaking afterwards Mrs Marson added: “It was kind of the PM to thank all those residents who have stepped forward to help Ukrainians fleeing the bloodshed. My staff and I have helped many receive their visas and travel here to safety.
“It was also important that I acknowledged the Prime Minister’s trips to Finland and Sweden. I believe the signing of security agreements with these two countries as they seek NATO membership is a huge step forward for the continent’s security.
“This shows Boris Johnson and the UK Government continuing to exercise considerable international leadership in regards to the efforts to support Ukraine, limit Russian military options and to secure NATO’s borders. He should be congratulated on this role.”
